How this calculation works

What each input means

  • Current savings — Starting balance before monthly contributions.
  • Monthly contribution — Added at the end of each month in the simulation.
  • Years — Number of years to project (converted to months).
  • Expected annual return (%) — Nominal rate converted to a monthly rate r = (annual ÷ 100) ÷ 12; use 0 for no growth (contributions only).

Formula used

Month-by-month: balance = balance × (1 + r) + monthly contribution for years × 12 months. This is a simplified projection, not tax-adjusted or inflation-adjusted.

Does not model employer match, contribution limits, or withdrawals; compare with the 401(k) tool for salary-percent contribution patterns.

  • Inputs are user-provided and may include rounding.
  • Where accuracy, eligibility, or obligations matter, rely on official disclosures and licensed professionals.
